Temporary inflatable seals for mine tunnels and shafts can help to control the air flow in underground labyrinths preventing "dead" spaces which could harbour noxious gases.
In the case of inaccessible subterranean fires they can be used to reduce the flow of air being drawn in and thus help in the containment and extinguishing of the conflagration.
